Girl Scouts App

Our initial brief was only to develop a customizable 3D avatar experience. What we ended up delivering was a strategic initiative to transform the Girl Scouts experience. Resulting in increased girl participation, improving retention, and bringing the curriculum into the digital age.

We started by interviewing the girls, volunteers, and employees to determine what they wanted and their pain points. One of the biggest challenges they faced was communication in a organized and safe environment. Thus, we created the troop board, where girls, caregivers, and troopleaders of a particular troop can plan, share, and be inspired by and with others in their own troop. The messaging platform was built on GetStream with TwoHat for moderation.

We heard that girls were tired of lugging around their giant binder of activities, so we digitized the program by making the whole national portfolio of awards visible within the app. This enables the girls to track their progress and view not only their own history, but also their peers. Moreover, the app empowers the girls to determine their own path by discovering and initiating the earning of awards that align with their own interests.

Lastly, we did fulfill the initial brief, we built a customizable Girl avatar experience with Unity, where the girls can model the avatar after their likeness, or they can select something completely random, like blue hair. Even on the avatar sash, we included a real reflection of the awards a girl has earned in the app.
